Organisers confirm Rushdie video conference today
Jaipur : Putting all speculations to rest, the Jaipur Literature Festival organisers confirmed that Salman Rushdie's video conference will take place today as scheduled. Denying that the authorities put any conditions before them, Organiser Sanjoy Roy said the government did not ask for any undertaking from them regarding the content of video conference. It was earlier reported that the session was given a nod on the condition that Rushdie will not speak about The Satanic Verses. The Rushdie session -Midnight's Child-is planned for 3.45pm. The author will discuss his childhood, his work, and the adaptation of his novel, Midnight's Children, into a film. Journalist Barkha Dutt would conduct the conference. Sanjoy Roy, confirming that they did receive information from intelligence agencies on threat to Salman Rushdie, said, "we shared the information with Mr. Rushdie" adding that they can only ensure protection of public, authors and the festival. According to what we know there was a credible threat, I'm not in position to see who serious were the threat, some newspapers reported that the threats were made up. You can ask them on what basis they made up this threat. When asked about police complaint after four authors read out excerpts from The Satanic Verses, he said they still haven't received any complaints. Update: 24-January-2012 Comments |
