AIA raises funds for Project India with engaging play

By SATimes Team

New York: The Association of Indians in America (AIA), NY chapter hosted its gala event  featuring an engaging play to raise funds for Project India, its own philanthropic arm serving the needs of the underserved in India.

At the event titled, “Spread Hope” at the Marymount Manhattan College in Upper Manhattan,  Project India team shared their journey, which had a humble beginning in response to the rampant spread of HIV/AIDS in India. In the past decade, AIA’s partnerships with the Ahmedabad based NGO, Gujarat AIDS Awareness and Prevention (GAP), and supported by a group of physicians of the Brooklyn Hospital, has taken long strides in making a measurable difference in the lives of thousands in rural and tribal villages, along the Gujarat-Rajasthan border, which have minimal access to medical care. Programs have evolved and the attention today is on Comprehensive Healthcare of Women and Children. Emphasizing that the results are encouraging, Project India’s Asmita Bhatia pointed out that much work is still needed and that every dollar raised goes directly to the help of the needy.

The audience looked forward to  the North American Premiere of ‘Three Women’, written and directed by Isheeta Ganguly. The play is based on two  heroines of Rabindranath Tagore’s novels, and his own liaison with his sister-in-law named Kadambari Devi. It showcased the predicament of women in the past and present who are seeking their identity. The three women were played with aplomb by Avantika Akerkar, Mahima Saigal and Zayn Marie Khan. Aided by narrator Samrat Chakrabarti and Isheeta’s melodious singing, the play garnered a standing ovation.

The Artists traveled from India, sponsored by Cheapoair and Turkish Airways.

AIA-NY President Gobind Munjal announced that their 31st Deepavali Festival will be held at South Street Seaport on October 7. AIA’s motto is: Indian heritage and American commitment. Its aims and activities were lauded by Consul General Sandeep Chakravorty.
