Houstonians celebrate India's 70th Republic Day

India’s 70th Republic Day celebrations were held with much gaiety at the India House in Houston on January 26. Over 200 Indian Americans and friends cheered as India’s Tricolor was hoisted along with U.S, Indian, Texan and India House flags. A formal program commenced on the lawns where the flag hoisting was held with India House President Jugal Malani welcoming the gathering. Malani highlighted President of India Ram Nath Kovind’s message on partnership and urged the community to continue its support to India House.

“The human experience is built on partnerships. Partnerships at home build a family. Partnerships at work build a business. Partnerships of different stakeholders build society. Partnerships of the government and the people build our nation. And partnerships of nations build a better world. In this manner partnerships are the thread knitting together family, nation and the world – and leading to the treatment of the World as a Family: Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” said President Kovind.

The program continued inside the India House where the trustee, Dr. Virendra Mathur read excerpts from the speech of the President of India, on the eve of India’s 70th Republic Day. India House Executive Director Col. Vipin Kumar (Retd.) emceed the program and spoke briefly about the mission of India House which is to unite the cultures of India and the U.S. and expose Indian culture to the Houston community. A group of children that attend the afterschool program at the India House presented an Indian dance with the guidance of the teachers.

Earlier, Serene Kaggal sang the American and Indian national anthem and an Indian patriotic song as well. An invigorating Bharata Natyam dance performance by Datta Subba Rao, 70 was very inspiring. Guests were treated to light refreshments.
