Parades galore to mark India Day in NY-NJ

New York: In the New York-tristate area, at first there was only the FIA parade, which started attracting big crowds some three decades ago when the organizers hit upon the brilliant idea of  inviting Bollywood stars. In the last decade or so, New Jersey has branched out to hold its own parades to celebrate India’s Independence Day. Now India Day parades are multiplying  in New York too. There are, of course, Independence Day celebrations at the Indian Consulate and the India’s Permanent Mission to the UN.

37th FIA Parade

Rana Daggubati, star of the recent massive multilingual hit ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’, will be the Grand Marshal at the 37th India Day Parade in New York on Aug 20 organized by the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) of NY-NJ-CT. Ramesh Patel, FIA chairman, and Andy Bhatia, FIA president, said that General Dalbir Singh Suhag, retired chief of Indian Armed Forces and the beautiful Tamannaah Bhatia, who also starred in ‘Baahubali 2’ are the parade’s Chief Guests.

Guests of Honor at the parade include mathematician Prof. Anand Kumar, Ajit Mody, chairman of  Rajbhog Foods, and the entire crew of the first all-women Air India flight.

The parade begins at noon on 38th street and Madison Avenue, ending at 26th street. The cultural programs will be in the evening on Madison Avenue, between 24th and 26th streets.

2nd India Day Parade,  Floral Park

August 12 will see the 2nd India Day parade held on Hillside Avenue in Flroal Park-BBellorse area,w hich now has a substantial Indian population.  Bollywood divas Mahima Chaudhry (‘Pardes’ fame) and Tanushree Dutta (‘Aashiq Banaya Aapne’) are playing the role of Grand Marshal at the parade which will culminate in a cultural mela. 

IBA  Parade, Edison, NJ

Indian Business Association’s 13th Annual India Day Parade, is scheduled for Aug 13 startigna t 1.30 pm from  Edison, proceeding to Iselin in NJ. Confirmed dignitaries include Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh, NJ Lt Governor Kim Guadagno, Congressman Frank Pallone.

A day before that, on Aug 12, there will be an India Day Parade at Showboat, Atlantic City Boardwalk, South Jersey at 3 pm.

Consulate and PMO

To mark the 70th anniversary of India's Independence Day, the tricolor will be unfurled on August 15 at the Indian Consulate in New York at a ceremony between 7.30-8.30 am, and at Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations at 8.45 am. All are invited.
