Suspect nabbed in hit-and-run death of Indian girl in Long Island

Mineola, NY:  Nassau County Police announced last weekend that the suspected killer of Taranjit Kaur Parmar in early November had been arrested and is being charged for second degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident, tampering with evidence, and reckless endangerment.

The suspect is Daniel Coppolo of Deer Park, NY, a 31-year old Emergency Medical Technician in the New York Fire Department. He is being held on a $1 million bail.

Taranjit, 18-year-old dental medicine student, was involved in a fender-bender on Nov 9 in Levittown, NY.  Her jeep was struck by a red pickup truck.  According to police, both drivers pulled off the road. While the victim was out of her vehicle, the suspect fled the scene striking Taranjit and running her over, killing her.

Coppolo was in custody for an unrelated crime and when he was let out, the Nassau County police were waiting for him.

Residents contacted the Nassau County police more than 50 times with leads in the case, the Acting Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder told  ABC& Taranjit’s father Ranjit Parmar said, “I want to thank the Nassau County Police Department, who worked tirelessly on this investigation.”

Speaking at  the press conference announcing Coppolo’s arrest, Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas exhorted the county lawmakers to come up with measures to prevent loss of life in such cases. She said, “How many more have to die this way before legislature acts?”

Coppolo faces up to 26 years in prison if convicted of the charges He has pleaded not guilty.

Coppolo’s attorney told the judge his client had been on psychiatric medical leave from the New York City Fire Department for three months. He said Coppolo suffers from manic depression and does not always take his medication.

Coppolo has a criminal record. He was arrested for DWI in 2016 and, in another case, was charged with attempted robbery at a Target store.
