New Delhi: In the run-up to the 78th Independence Day, an inter-state coordination meeting of multiple law enforcement agencies was held on August 7 at the Delhi Police Headquarters, focusing on the prevention of smuggling of firearms, intelligence inputs on terror activities, and verifying the addresses of Bangladeshi ‘criminals’, Delhi Police said in a statement.
Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora chaired the meeting which was attended by senior officers from Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir.
The officers shared terror-related intelligence inputs and anti-terror measures, including border checking, and verification of suspicious elements. Issues related to the movement of paragliders, drones, and other flying objects from the open areas were also discussed. Advance information about the movement of any suspicious elements/vehicles was stressed.
The Delhi Police on August 8 intensified their security measures and public awareness efforts by putting up posters of wanted terrorists across the city. "We're putting up these posters to increase public awareness ahead of Independence Day," said Sub-inspector Komal.
Security checks for passengers would be further intensified by the CISF across the metro stations starting from August 6. Additionally, the Delhi Police have imposed a ban on sub-conventional aerial devices such as para-gliders, paramotors, hang-gliders, drones, and microlight aircraft within the national capital.
In Punjab, police have heightened security across the state with a special operation, “OPS Seal-VII”, aimed at checking all vehicles entering or exiting the state. Nakas have been set up at 91 entry/exit points in 10 border districts to check drug trafficking, and liquor smuggling.
Last year, on the eve of Independence Day, Delhi Police received several bomb threat calls, which caused widespread panic across the city. Intelligence agencies had warned of a possible terrorist attack during the 77th Independence Day celebrations, leading to heightened security at key locations. These measures included the Red Fort, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will again lead the 78th Independence Day ceremonies this year.
