New Delhi: The Election Commission has notified that elections for 12 vacant Rajya Sabha seats will be held on September 3, 2024, and votes will be counted on the same day. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is August 26-27. Among the 10 Rajya Sabha seats that have fallen vacant are those of Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Sarbananda Sonowal, and Jyotiraditya Scindia, all of whom were elected to the Lok Sabha.
The other Rajya Sabha members who won the parliamentary polls and moved to the Lok Sabha are Kamakhya Prasad Tasa (BJP), Misa Bharti (RJD), Vivek Thakur (BJP), Deepender Singh Hooda (Congress), Udayanraje Bhosle (BJP), K C Venugopal (Congress) and Biplab Kumar Deb (BJP). The BJP, which presently has 87 members in the Upper House, is likely to gain four seats at the cost of the Congress, the RJD, and the Biju Janata Dal.
Out of the 12 seats, 2 each are from Assam, Bihar, and Maharashtra; and 1 each from Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tripura, Telangana, and Odisha.
