The senior Congress leader met a delegation of US lawmakers and had a meaningful discussion on the shared commitment to building a progressive future.

New York: For Rahul Gandhi, Congress Party MP and the Leader of Opposition (LoP), the diaspora here has ‘two identities’ – that of the US and India — and they can transfer the ideas back and forth. For him, the diaspora is the vital bridge between two great nations. He also stressed the importance of the India-US relationship.

“And you make us very proud because we understand what it meant for you to come here. We understand the difficulties and struggles you faced. But you came here with humility, respect, and affection…you did not say that the United States is inferior to us, or that you hate the United States. You are proud of both India and the United States,” the Congress MP noted during his three-day US visit.

The senior Congress leader wrote to his social media platform: “I am truly delighted by the warm welcome I’ve received in Dallas, Texas, USA, from the Indian Diaspora and members of the Indian Overseas Congress.” This was Rahul Gandhi's first trip to America since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Calling his interaction with students and faculty at the University of Texas "dynamic and engaging", Gandhi said that they held discussions on politics, production, and skill respect in India. The LoP arrived in the US on a three-day visit during which he had "meaningful discussions and insightful conversations" to further strengthen the bond between India and America. The Congress MP was welcomed by Sam Pitroda, chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, and members of the Indian diaspora.

Gandhi also met Donald Lu, assistant secretary of state, bureau of South and Central Asia, in Washington as ‘part of regular diplomatic engagement’. “The US government meets with members of government and opposition parties, as well as civil society representatives and other stakeholders, as part of our regular diplomatic engagement with our partners,” the US Department of State spokesperson said in a statement. Lu is set to visit India and Bangladesh later this month.

Gandhi also met American legislators at Capitol Hill. He met several members of the India Caucus during his visit. Taking to X social media platform, Gandhi said, “It was a pleasure to meet with a delegation of US lawmakers at the Rayburn House in Washington, DC. We had a meaningful discussion about our shared commitment to building a progressive future and strengthening the Indo-US relations”.
