Toronto: Facing immense pressure from within his own party, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has now been given an ultimatum by dissident Liberal MPs to decide his future by October 28, according to reports. Internal calls for Trudeau's resignation as Liberal leader intensified as party MPs convened on Parliament Hill, according to a report by CBC News. During the closed-door meeting, dissenting MPs conveyed their grievances to Trudeau, reflecting growing discontent within the party.

This gathering was part of the weekly caucus meetings that take place while the House of Commons is in session. During the caucus meeting, a document was presented outlining the case for Trudeau's resignation, but it didn't specify any consequences if he failed to meet the deadline.

Sources told Radio-Canada that 24 MPs signed an agreement to call on Trudeau to step down as Liberal leader, CBC News reported. During the meeting, British Columbia MP Patrick Weiler presented a document that argued in favor of Trudeau's resignation. It suggested that the Liberal party could experience a resurgence similar to what the Democrats saw after US President Joe Biden opted not to run for re-election in the upcoming presidential elections in the country.

Meanwhile, Trudeau confirmed that he would lead the Liberal Party into the next election, despite calls from some party members that he would step down after three terms in office. He acknowledged there were “robust conversations” about the future but made it clear, saying that "will happen with me as leader going into the next election.”

Jaishankar slams Canadian 'double standards'

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar slammed the "double standards" adopted by the Justin Trudeau-led government in Canada on the way it treats Indian envoys and its expectations from New Delhi on Canadian diplomats' privileges. Speaking at a media event in New Delhi, Jaishankar said: "The license they give themselves is totally different from the restrictions they impose on diplomats in Canada."

Referring to the troubled relations with Canada in recent times, S Jaishankar said Canada has a problem with Indian diplomats trying to find out about what is happening there in relation to India, "but the Canadian diplomat in India will have no problem with collecting information on our military or police, profiling people, targeting people to be stopped in Canada”. He also took a swipe at Ottawa for interpreting freedom of expression as per its own convenience.
