After Super Tuesday, it’s Joe Biden’s race to lose

By SATimes Team

New York: By all accounts, former Vice President Joe Biden performed a miracle on ‘Super Tuesday’. In the 14 Democratic primaries, he won state after state, including Texas, only losing California to Senator Bernie Sanders, that too by not too large a margin. By Thursday night, according to the tally by RealClearPolitics, Biden had 626 delegates to Sanders’ 550. In the remaining states yet to hold their primaries to decide the Democratic nominee for President, Biden is expected to maintain the momentum that he suddenly gained after winning South Carolina by a huge margin last week.

After endorsements from presidential candidates who dropped out – Michael Bloomberg, Amy Klobuchar, and Pete Buttigieg — clearly, the Democratic establishment and moderates are coalescing around Biden. Finally, they feel saved from the dread of nominating a self-proclaimed democratic socialist in the Senator from Vermont who does have a devoted following and passionate policy platform.

Now, more than the delegate numbers, RealClearPolitics gives some other numbers which indicate that the Biden has sealed the deal. He is polling nationally at 34.3, while Sanders is at 26.8. More interestingly, betting adds give Biden 86.3, and Sanders 16.0.

So, President Trump was right all along that President Obama’s Veep would be the one challenging his re-election this November, so he had started ‘opposition research’ last year. It could turn out to be a good matchup. Biden’s funds crunch is also almost solved. Former NYC mayor Bloomberg may be out of the race after burning through half a billion dollars to win a mere 60 delegates, but he has promised to keep spending with the common goal to defeat Trump. In fact, strong dislike of Trump has united Democratic voters behind Biden, whom they see as most likely to defeat the incumbent.

Senator Elizbeth Warren has also quit the race after a dismal performance on Super Tuesday, even losing her home state of Massachusetts. She has not endorsed either Bernie or Biden. She may be looking to be picked up as running mate by the eventual nominee. It seems certain that the veep nominee from the Democratic side will be a woman – Senator Kamala Harris, Klobuchar… The speculation is that even Trump may drop Mike Pence in favor of a woman running mate, maybe Nikki Haley.
