‘Barbie’ trails in India, but leads the race overseas

Director Greta Gerwig’s fantasy comedy ‘Barbie’, based on the Mattel doll, is losing steam at the box office, at least in India. The film could earn only Rs 2.50 crore on its first weekday, on July 24, reported the industry tracker Saclink. This is a big fall from July 23’s Rs 7.15 crore. The film’s below-par performance at the ticket counters can be attributed to ‘Oppenheimer’, which had more takers.

Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the film started its run in Indian theatres with Rs 5 crore. Over the weekend, it registered a total of Rs 18.65 cr, and now with Rs 2.50 cr on July 24, the film’s total collection in India stands at Rs 21.15 cr.

Internationally, however, Barbie is outperforming ‘Oppenheimer’. The news agency Associated Press reported, “Barbie earned $182 million from 69 territories, fueling a $337 million global weekend. Oppenheimer did $93.7 million from 78 territories, ranking above Barbie in India, for a $174.2 million global total.”

Overall, both movies have brought back some cheer at the cinemas, which had been experiencing a dry spell for some time. Besides ‘Satyaprem Ki Katha’, ‘Zara Hatke Zara Bachke’ and ‘Mission Impossible 7’, and ‘Fast X’, Indian audiences haven’t thronged theatres this year.
