Barclays CEO Venkatakrishnan says has ‘curable’ cancer, will stay on post

India-born chief executive officer of British bank Barclays CS Venkatakrishnan has been diagnosed with cancer and he said that the condition is curable. During his treatment, Venkatakrishnan will remain in the top post and continue to be actively engaged in managing it.

Barclays has not appointed an interim chief executive as Venkat and the bank’s executive committee will continue to run the lender, according to a company spokesperson. 56-year-old Venkat will work from home for some time.

Venkatakrishnan in a letter said that he has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and his prognosis is “excellent”. The Barclays CEO further shared that his condition is curable as per doctors and the treatment is expected to last 12 to 16 weeks at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Barclay will “run normally” during the CEO’s treatment and the latter “will continue to be actively engaged in managing it.” He won’t be able to travel, according to a regulatory filing.

“I have been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The good news is that the matter has been detected early, with scans and biopsies confirming it to be very localized. The doctors have advised that my prognosis is excellent, and my condition is curable with their prescribed regimen,” Venkatakrishnan said in a regulatory filing on Monday.

Venkatakrishnan assumed the bank’s CEO post after his predecessor Jes Staley stepped down last year in November after a probe into his relationship with disgraced financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Prior to joining Barclays in 2016, Venkat worked at JP Morgan Chase from 1994, holding senior roles in asset management where he was chief investment officer for nearly $200 billion in global fixed income, as well as in investment banking, and in risk.
