British-Indian journalist’s monograph of PM Modi unveiled in Sharjah

A monograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi by British Indian writer Mihir Bose, which had been termed as a fascinating and original take on one of the most interesting political leaders of our age by David Smith of The Sunday Times, has been unveiled at Sharjah International Book Fair.

The 62-page monograph titled, ‘Narendra Modi – The Yogi of Populism’ was originally launched in the United Kingdom in February earlier this year.  The unveiling at the Sharjah International Book Fair is aimed at bringing the monograph to a wider audience.

Mihir Bose was BBC’s first sports editor in the 1970s. He has also written a book titled, ‘The Nine Waves: The Extraordinary Story of India Cricket’, which discusses cricket, its future, and how India has come to dominate the world cricket.

Bose told the audience in an hour-long interactive session at the Sharjah Expo Centre that he got the idea of writing the book after coming across a graffiti in 1981 in Mumbai’s Kemp Corner that read, ‘Mrs. Gandhi saves the Hindus’.

“That was the start of the idea that you have lost your country and that you needed someone to salvage it. (Donald) Trump used it, Boris Johnson has used it and so has (Narendra) Modi,” Bose said. He went on to explain his argument that how, according to him, the Indian Prime Minister’s playbook for winning elections provided a template for both Trump and Johnson.

“There is this strong belief that India was once a great nation and that the greatness that was lost because of previous governments for decades is now being reclaimed by Modi’s government,” Bose said.
