Dhanush to play Ilaiyaraaja in the music maestro’s biopic: reports

Actor Dhanush has reportedly been roped in to play the role of legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja in the latter’s biopic. According to the reports, the film will go on floors in 2024 and aim for a 2025 release. Ilayaraaja’s music is popular around the world and has been bestowed with the moniker of Isaignani, which translates into a ‘musical sage’.

The news of the biopic was tweeted by senior journalist Latha Srinivasan. She wrote, “Exclusive news: Dhanush confirmed to essay Music Maestro Illaiyaraaja in his biopic! According to trusted sources, it is confirmed that National Award-winning star Dhanush will be playing Isaignani Illaiyaraaja in his biopic.

Sources added that the movie will go on floors in 2024 and will release in 2025. This is likely to be a huge project given that it is about one of India’s music legends and has uber-talented Dhanush playing the role. The project is said to be produced by Connekkt Media.”

She further added, “A few months back Yuvan Shankar Raja had said that he would love to see Dhanush play his father Ilaiyaraaja in his biopic and the stars seem to have aligned. This is the first biopic Dhanush will be seen in and it’s an iconic role. The Captain Miller star is one of Ilaiyaraaja’s biggest fans and this role will definitely bag him some awards I think. As we know, Isaignani Ilaiyaraaja has composed over 7000 songs for over 1000 feature films; and performed over 20,000 concerts during his career of over 50 years. He has received many honours, including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. ‘Maestro’ was the title conferred on him by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London. Interestingly, Connekkt Media is the producer of Mohanlal’s pan-Indian film Vrushabha. I tried contacting Connekkt Media but couldn’t reach them…”

An official confirmation from the makers is awaited. The Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan awardee, has worked in over a 1000 films. He is also the recipient of five National awards.

Dhanush has a strong line-up of films awaiting him. He will be seen in Tamil film ‘Captain Miller’, directed by Arun Matheswaran. The film also stars Priyanka Arul Mohan and Shivaraj Kumar, and will be released on December 15, 2023. Dhanush has also been roped in for a film with Sekhar Kammula’s film, tentatively titled ‘D51’ and also stars Rashmika Mandanna.
