French President Emmanuel Macron has said he won't name a new government until after the end of the Paris Olympics.
Paris: France's leftist New Popular Front, which won the most seats in the largest number of seats in parliament during this month’s snap elections, said it has selected Lucie Castets as their prime ministerial candidate. The left-wing coalition highlighted their candidate's efforts in combating tax fraud and financial crime.
Castets is a 37-year-old economist and civil servant who currently works as director of finance and purchasing for the City of Paris, but has no background in party politics, the BBC reported. Castets said on X that it was "with great humility but also great conviction" that she accepted the nomination.
Shortly after the announcement, French President Emmanuel Macron appeared in an interview on France 2 and said he would not pick a new prime minister until after the end of the Paris Olympics. As Macron stated that a new appointment before mid-August would "create disorder", Left-wing politicians accused him of trying to "cancel the result of the legislative elections".
The Olympic Games in Paris, running from July 26 to August 11, pose a significant logistics and security challenge for France, with 35 venues and an estimated 10,500 athletes.
Gabriel Attal submitted his resignation as prime minister to Macron on July 8 after the ruling party failed to secure a majority in the snap legislative elections.
On July 16, Macron accepted Attal's resignation but asked him to stay as the head of a caretaker cabinet until the formation of a new administration.
