Producers of Malayalam film 'Manjummel Boys' reportedly paid a sum of Rs 60 lakh as compensation to music composer Ilaiyaraaja over unauthorized usage of 'Kanmani Anbodu' song from 'Gunaa' in the film. As per reports, Ilaiyaraaja demanded a compensation of Rs two crore after the film became a hit. However, the matter was eventually settled for Rs 60 lakhs, which the producers -- Soubin Shahir, Babu Shahir, and Shawn Antony -- paid to resolve the legal issue.
Back in May, Ilaiyaraaja and his team sent a legal notice to the film's producers for copyright violation. The composer claimed that the makers did not seek his permission or obtain an NOC (No Objection Certificate) for the song. In the notice, Ilaiyaraaja has demanded that the filmmakers either secure his authorization to use the song or remove it entirely from the movie. Though the makers of 'Manjummel Boys' thanked Ilaiyaraaja in the rolling credits, his counsel still called it an 'exploitation of work'.
'Manjummel Boys' is directed by Chidambaram and earned over Rs 200 crore worldwide. The film follows the story of a bunch of guys who plan a trip to Kodaikanal. One of their friends falls into the deadly fissures of the famous 'Gunaa' cave. The survival drama is about how their friend is rescued with the littlest of help.
