The arms were recovered days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jammu and Kashmir to campaign for Bharatiya Janata Party candidates in the upcoming assembly election. Modi will visit the Union territory twice – first on September 14, followed by his second visit on September 19.
The Indian Army said that the searches in the area led to the recovery of a very large cache of arms ammunition and explosives including AK 47 rounds, hand grenades, RPG rounds, material for Improvised Explosive Devices and other war-like stores.
The development came as two terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in the region's Kathua district. A ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the Jammu border was also reported this week. Jammu and Kashmir is set to hold elections in three phases starting on September 18, with results expected on October 8.
