Elmhurst Hospital’s Dr Laura Iavicoli honored with Advancing Emergency Care Award

NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst on Sept 2, 2022, announced that Dr.  Laura Iavicoli, the hospital’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer, has won the prestigious Advancing Emergency Care Award from the New York American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), which recognizes New York ACEP members for significant contributions in advancing emergency care in the state. Dr. Iavicoli played a pivotal role during the pandemic, guiding the hospital through the first COVID-19 surge in March 2020 using her background in disaster management to develop new and innovative procedures and treatment protocols to provide care for those affected by the disease. Dr. Iavicoli has worked as an emergency medicine physician at the hospital since 2001. NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst’s Emergency Department Chief Stuart Kessler, MD, was recognized with the award in 2020.

In a larger sense, however, this award is more appropriately deserved by the amazing colleagues I have worked with at NYC Health + Hospitals, NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, the New York State Department of Health, the operations leads of New York’s downstate healthcare systems, and many more organizations. I am deeply grateful for this honor and look forward to working hard and continuing my collaboration with all of these inspiring colleagues in the years to come.” 

Dr. Iavicoli is an experienced board-certified emergency medicine physician with expertise in disaster preparedness and pandemic response. Before becoming Deputy Chief Medical Officer, she served as NYC Health + Hospitals’ systemwide Assistant Vice President for Emergency Management. Dr. Laura Iavicoli has worked as an emergency medicine physician at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst since 2001. During her time at Elmhurst, she’s held the title of Associate Director of the Emergency Department and Clinical Emergency Management and Emergency Medicine Services Director. She’s also served as the Sexual Assault Response Team Director for NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens. 

She has devoted much of her career to emergency management issues, with publications, training, and seminars pertaining to disaster preparedness, including pandemic response, terrorism and mass casualty incidents. During her professional career at NYC Health + Hospitals, Dr. Iavicoli has also served as an Associate Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and has been responsible for training and teaching emergency medicine residents, internal medicine residents, and medical students in Emergency Medicine.  

Dr. Iavicoli is a graduate of Boston College. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey.
