Four Marathi films have reportedly been selected to premiere during the Cannes Film Festival 2025, which is all set to be held in May in France, Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar revealed. During a recent press conference, Shelar said that a panel of experts chosen by the Maharashtra Film, Theatre and Cultural Development Corporation made the selections. He said, “It is a matter of recognition that 'Sthal', 'Snow Flower' and 'Khalid Ka Shivaji' have been officially selected, while 'Juna Furniture' has received a special screening slot.”

Shelar added, “Since 2016, the corporation has been sending Marathi films to the Cannes film market to build global exposure and connect with international audiences.” The minister also talked about the films.

He shared that 'Sthal' is inspired by real social issues and revolves around arranged marriage traditions in rural India. Shelar said, "The film presents a narrative rooted in real social settings, and its presence at the Cannes speaks of the relevance of Marathi cinema."

According to a PTI report, the film 'Snow Flower' bridges Russian and Konkan cultures through a story that spans different lands. Directed by Gajendra Ahire, the film is set in Siberia and the Konkan region. The minister added about 'Juna Furniture': "The film sheds light on the reality of ageing and how it affects relationships within families, which resonates universally and deserves the platform Cannes offers”. Directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, the film focuses on the challenges faced by senior citizens.

For the unversed, 'Khalid Ka Shivaji' follows a boy named Khalid, who is isolated by his peers because of his religion, yet he finds inspiration from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
