Chakra seven is at the top of the head and represents knowledge and understanding. The seventh chakra is also known as the "crown chakra" or "thousand petal lotus” from its name Sahastra which means “thousand-fold”.
The Crown Chakra is considered as the seat of enlightenment in yoga -- the ultimate state of consciousness, which transcends the mind and physical body.
This seventh chakra governs the pineal gland, which assimilates light vibrations from the universe and directs them into the body.
When the pineal gland is out of balance, an individual may suffer from lack of enthusiasm, loss of confidence and vitality. The person may become sick.
When seventh chakra is in balance, universal love energy easily vibrates into the individual.
The person lives through the higher spiritual laws of love, peace , hope and charity. There are many yogic interventions for balancing this chakra, and one of them is Crown Mudra.
Technique
1. Sit on the floor or on a chair with straight back and relax till your breath is rhythmic.
2. Now place your left hand above the top (crown) of your head, and your right hand by the lowest part of the spine i.e coccyx and hold for two minutes, breathing normally.
Benefit
1. This mudra balances seventh chakra and pineal gland and relaxes the entire chakra system.
Caution
This mudra should not be practiced by children under age 12 as this mudra may activate the sex glands, thyroid gland and pituitary gland before maturing process and hamper the normal development of the mind, body and spirit.
