Indian American medical student falls to death in Philadelphia

Washington: An Indian-American medical student fell to his death while jumping between rooftops in the city of Philadelphia, according to news reports.

The victim was identified as the 23-year-old third-year Drexel College of Medicine student Vivek Subramani, the NRI Pulse newspaper reported.

According to the police, witnesses said Subramani and two friends on the night of January 11 were jumping between rooftops of their apartment building, when the accident happened. Police said that they had been drinking at a fraternity event earlier in the evening.

Subramani was found by his friends face down in a pool of blood and unresponsive. They began to administer CPR until medics arrived. He was then taken to the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A ‘GoFundMe’ page set up for Subramani by the Philadelphia chapter of the Sigma Beta Rho fraternity described him as a bright, young and caring man who was so close to achieving his dreams of becoming a doctor. The organizers of the fundraiser aim to raise $35,000 and have so far collected nearly $27,000.

“After speaking with the family, they have chosen to use this money in the way Vivek would’ve wanted them to. They have chosen to create an annual scholarship for aspiring medical students at the Drexel University College of Medicine to help them reach their dream of becoming a doctor,” said the organizers.

“Vivek was a bright, young and caring man who was so close to achieving his dreams of becoming a doctor. He would always brighten up any room he walked into and was more than a friend to those who knew him,” they added.

Asked about the contradictory statements of university and police, Drexel spokesperson Niki Gianakaris said in an email: “The Philadelphia Police Department is handling the investigation so they would be the ones to confirm any details about the incident”.
