LeT commander Uzair Khan killed, week-long J&K encounter ends

Srinagar: Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Uzair Khan was killed along with another terrorist on September 19, the seventh day of the Anantnag encounter, an official said. Officials suspect the death of a third terrorist, as the search operation for his body continues.

Security officials also recovered a weapon from Uzair Khan’s body, ADGP Kashmir Police Vijay Kumar said. With his death, the seven-day-long encounter has concluded, though the search operation will continue, he said.

“LeT commander Uzair Khan has been killed, with the recovery of his weapon. Additionally, another terrorist’s lifeless body has been found. The Anantnag encounter has concluded, but the search operation continues, ” ADGP Police Vijay Kumar said. The encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists hiding in the Kokernag area of Anantnag district in Jammu and Kashmir last week.

“There is a huge area that remains to be searched. There can be a lot of unexploded shells which will be recovered and destroyed. We appeal to the people not to go to the area,” he added.

The ADGP said security forces had reports that two to three terrorists were there. “There is a possibility that the third dead body may be somewhere. It will be known after the search is complete,” Kumar said.
