New York City, NY – In an inspiring move to bridge the gap in tech education, high school student Vihaan Kotahwala developed and implemented a cutting-edge AI curriculum in underserved communities across New York City this summer. The program has already made its mark at esteemed organizations and schools, including the Boys Club of New York, YMCA, Tompkins Square Middle School, and Garden of Hope, and has reached over 260 students in the New York City area over the past year.
Vihaan's initiative is designed to stimulate interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computer Science among students who may not otherwise have access to such educational opportunities. By introducing these students to the latest technologies and demonstrating how AI impacts their everyday lives, Vihaan is opening new horizons and sparking a passion for innovation.
"Our goal is to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in an AI-powered world," said Vihaan. He continues, "I want learners to feel empowered by this technology, to believe that they have the power to shape their future.”
The curriculum, which includes hands-on projects and real-world applications, aims to provide students with a robust understanding of AI and its transformative potential. Through this initiative, Vihaan is not only teaching technical skills but also fostering a sense of confidence and possibility among the next generation of tech leaders.

Feedback from participating students and educators has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the program's impact in making complex concepts accessible and engaging. Danielle, a Manhattan-based YMCA counselor, says, “The class is very in-depth, very interactive, very hands-on and most importantly, my fifth graders just get really excited when they hear it’s time for AI class.” She adds, “To be honest, even as a counselor, I’m learning things that can really help me outside of work.”
Odeon Perez, a site coordinator at the Tompkins Square Middle School, shares this sentiment, adding that this class has inspired his students to pursue future careers. He adds, “I recommend this AI class to any program that serves the youth! Thanks to the AI class we have students discussing possibly working in a tech field when they get of age!”
As the curriculum continues to expand, Vihaan hopes to reach even more young minds and inspire a future where technology serves as a catalyst for positive change.
