Washington DC: Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi invoked the principle of Trusteeship by Mahatma Gandhi to describe the way forward for India-US relationship in decades to come. PM Modi in his opening remarks at the India-US bilateral summit with President Joe Biden said that the principle of Trusteeship of Mahatma Gandhi would shine over India-US relationship.
“When Mahatma Gandhi talked about trusteeship of the planet, it is obvious that the responsibility of the global citizens is only going to go up. It means that the planet that we have, we have to bequeath it to the next generations; and this sentiment of trusteeship is going to assume more and more importance globally,” Modi said.
Modi recalled his meeting with President Biden in 2014 and 2016 and his vision for the world, which Modi termed as ‘inspirational.’ “As President of the USA, you are making all efforts and taking initiative to implement that vision and I warmly welcome that,” Modi said.
Modi hoped that the third decade of the 21st century is going to be a transformative period for all democratic countries in the world. “The seeds have been sown for the Indo-US relations and are expected to expand in this decade as I see it when I look at the entire decade.” Modi said.
Stressing on shared democratic values and traditions of India and USA, Modi said that democratic traditions, democratic values and traditions to which both India and USA are committed, will only increase further.
President Biden in the bilateral meeting had acknowledged the participation of the Indian-American community in the progress of the USA. Modi hoped that Indian-Americans will play a greater role and Indian talent will be a co-partner in the India-US relationship in decades to come.
“The most important driving force in the world today would be that of technology and the technology that is going to be for the service and for the use of humanity and I find that opportunities for this are going to be tremendous,” Modi said. Modi hoped that trade between India and USA is also going to be a tremendously important aspect of the India-US relationship.
PM Modi appreciated the effort by US President Joe Biden on tackling Covid-19 pandemic, the issue of climate change and security issues including QUAD. “We will look towards how we can work further together not only for our respective countries but for the entire world. How we can take positive actions and I am quite and absolutely convinced that under your leadership whatever we do, it will be extremely relevant for the entire world,” Modi said.
