A 30-year-old Sikh woman in the US has committed suicide after suffering years of alleged domestic abuse by her husband. Mandeep Kaur allegedly committed suicide on August 3 after she posted a video online in which she spoke about years of domestic abuse by her husband Ranjodhbeer Singh Sandhu.
“We are deeply saddened by the death of Mandeep Kaur in Queens, New York under most tragic circumstances. We are in touch with the US authorities at Federal and local level as well as the community. We stand ready to render all assistance,” the Indian Consulate tweeted on Saturday.
Kaur leaves behind two young daughters aged 4 and 6 years.
In the video posted online, Kaur, seen crying and distressed, says she cannot take the abuse anymore and also talks about taking her own life.
In a video allegedly taken before her death, Mandeep Kaur said,” The people responsible for my death are my husband and my in-laws. They didn’t let me live. He has been beating me all along for the last 8 years.”
She also accused her husband of infidelity, adding “Still, I ignored it and moved here (New York). But here he started beating me up no matter if he was drunk or not. He continued to have his affairs.”
An FIR has been registered at the Najibabad Police Station of Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh against the husband and her in-laws.
The New York Police department is investigating the case. Mandeep Kaur’s family is trying hard to bring her body back to India.
