Mindy Kaling says ‘Legally Blonde 3’ is a challenging project

‘Legally Blonde’ hit the big screen in 2001 and turned out to be an instant success at the box office, the audience only had to wait two years for its sequel, ‘Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde’, in 2003. But it has been a complete 20 years since the second installment of the hit film, and fans have been waiting for ‘Legally Blonde 3’ with bated breath.

Mindy Kaling, who wrote the franchise, finally has some updates on ‘Legally Blonde 3’. During an appearance on a podcast, Kaling explained that though they have written multiple iterations of the script for the anticipated follow-up in Reese Witherspoon’s iconic movie franchise, the industry’s current standstill due to the SAG-AFTRA/WGA strikes prevent them from moving forward.

She explained, “Obviously, now we sort of have pencils down because of the writers strike, but it has had a couple of iterations over the past couple of years. And I think it is a challenging project because of what makes it so great. Elle Woods is like Reese (Witherspoon’s) ‘Avengers’ character, and people feel so passionately about this.”

“I am just someone who is coming in to co-write the third movie, and I even see how excited people are. And what is Elle Woods doing in 2023 or 2024 when culture has changed so much since then? And so that’s tricky as a writer— writing something that is incredibly funny and is a great role for Reese but is saying something about feminism now, she added. “I am still hoping that ‘Legally Blonde 3’ is gonna come together in the right way.”
