In 2008, the New York American College for Emergency Physicians (NY ACEP) established the Advancing Emergency Care Award to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing emergency care in New York State.
This year, Rahul Sharma, M.D., the Barbara and Stephen Friedman Professor and Chair of Emergency Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and Emergency Physician-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, has been awarded that distinction.
As a national leader in emergency medicine, healthcare operations, telemedicine, and virtual healthcare, Dr. Sharma’s operational and research focus centers on developing novel care delivery models. He leverages technology to enhance patient experience, safety, and overall quality of care. He has launched several innovative virtual care platforms at NYP-Weill Cornell Medicine including Virtual Urgent Care, ED Telehealth Express Care, and the Community Tele-Paramedicine program. As Founder and Executive Director of the Center for Virtual Care, Dr. Sharma oversees the clinical, education and research missions of the center. His contributions have been widely recognized, with publications in peer-reviewed journals and invitations to speak at national and international programs, including the National Academy of Medicine. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC).
“This is such a meaningful recognition of our department, faculty and staff who advance our specialty and the core mission of our organization. I am grateful for the wonderful colleagues that I work with, not only at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian, but across our state and country. Many of the initiatives that I have been involved in over the years are the result of amazing collaborations and support,” said Dr. Sharma.
