New York: The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY has announced a significant leadership update to its foundation’s board of directors, aimed at reinforcing its mission of delivering accessible, world-class journalism education.
Vivek Shah, the Chief Executive Officer of Ziff Davis, has been appointed as the new chair of the Newmark J-School Foundation board. Shah, a recognized figure in the media industry, brings a wealth of experience in digital innovation and strategic leadership. Prior to his current role, he held senior executive positions at Time, Inc., including Digital Group President and President of the Fortune/Money Group.
Shah takes over from Arthur Sulzberger Jr., former chairman of The New York Times Company, who has served on the board since 2018. Sulzberger’s tenure helped shape the foundation’s strategic direction and its support for journalism that reflects the diverse voices of New York City and beyond.
The Newmark J-School Foundation plays a critical role in funding scholarships, stipends for internships, cutting-edge research, and specialized training programs that equip future journalists with the tools to succeed. The recent expansion of the board underlines a bold initiative to make the school tuition-free, continuing CUNY’s long-standing legacy of educational equity and social mobility.
This leadership transition signals a renewed commitment to broadening access and building a more inclusive media landscape through quality journalism education.
