Padma Awards 2021: Three Indian Americans among honorees

Father of fiber optics Narinder Singh Kapany (Padma Vibhushan), Harvard Business School dean Srikant Datar (Padma Shri) and soil scientist Rattan Lal (Padma Shri)

The Ministry of Home Affairs on the eve of Republic Day (January 25) announced the list of Padma awardees for 2021.

The Padma Awards, namely Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, are among the highest civilian awards in India, given for excellence in disciplines such as art, social work, public affairs, sports, etc.

The awards are usually given by the President at a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan every year.

This year, President Ram Nath Kovind has approved 119 Padma Awards including 1 duo case.

Srikant Datar, dean, Harvard Business School conferred Padma Shri for contribution to Literature and Education

Former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe, Singer S P Balasubramaniam (posthumously), Archaeologist BB Lal are being awarded Padma Vibhushan.

Meanwhile, former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, former Principal Secretary to PM Nripendra Misra, former Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan (posthumous), former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi (posthumous) & religious leader Kalbe Sadiq (posthumous) are among 10 recipient of Padma Bhushan award.

Former Governor of Goa Mridula Sinha, British film director Peter Brook, Father Vallés (posthumous), Professor Chaman Lal Sapru (posthumous) are among 102 recipients of Padma Shri award.
