New Jersey: Governor Phil Murphy has become the first Democrat reelected governor in New Jersey in 44 years, defeating Republican former Assembly member Jack Ciattarelli. Murphy’s margin was under 1 percentage point, but AP called the race for him and he declared victory on Wednesday.
Ciattarelli, who waged a formidable campaign in the heavily Democratic state, gave Murphy a run for his money. In the closing stretch, Murphy, a Goldman Sachs executive, made appearances with both President Biden and former president Barack Obama.
Ciattarelli has not conceded the race, arguing that “after 2.4 million ballots” were counted, “there are still tens of thousands of vote-by-mail and provisional ballots yet to be counted.”
