BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha

Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the fifth spiritual leader and president of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, was able to consolidate the fundamental spiritual values, workflow systems, and organizational activities of BAPS on a global level during his tenure, an achievement that has been attributed to his exemplary leadership qualities and managerial skills. Despite having studied only up to sixth grade, Swamishri’s innate managerial skills blossomed under the guidance of his gurus Shastriji Maharaj and Yogiji Maharaj.
His management methods are congruent with modern management and can be understood through the following aspects: people management, resource management, and value management. People management is crucial, and Swamishri understood, adjusted, managed, and positively engaged all the working generations and delivered extraordinary results. He worked with swamis of 30–35 years with the precision and mindfulness of a CEO of a multinational working with his executives. His ability to deliver results and execute world-class global projects under a spiritual NON-PROFIT setup made him special and unique. He used to accept people’s shortcomings and adjust to them, making them love Swamishri until their last breath. He believed that a person’s limitation should be understood, and one should immediately adjust to their shortcomings, highlighting his flexible approach to people’s shortcomings. He had a rare ability to adapt to new people and ideas and encouraged his followers to do the same.

Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s work culture and delivery model in a spiritual organization differs from corporates, which work on the principle of ‘Pay and Smile,’ where the employer compensates the employee monetarily for their work, and the employee works for the pay. However, in a spiritual non-profit, it works on the principle of ‘Serve and Smile.’ Therefore, Pramukh Swami had to work on a spiritual level to help people imbibe cultural values, understand the mindset and expectations of people, adjust according to their counterparts, and consider other humane intangibles. This quality of Swamishri enabled BAPS to execute world-class projects globally under a spiritual non-profit setup.

Swamishri managed resources efficiently by using them judiciously and preventing waste. This was done through his value management principles, which ensured that every resource was used to its full potential. He had a system in place to make sure every resource was used to the fullest extent possible, making it possible to get the most out of every investment. In addition, he believed in using technology to make things easier and more efficient, and he encouraged his followers to do the same.

In conclusion, Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s ability to deliver results and execute world-class projects globally under a spiritual non-profit set up made him special and unique. He functioned on the principle of ‘Flexibility to Firmness,’ and he had a rare ability to adapt to new people and ideas. His methods of management are congruent with those of modern management and can be understood through people management, resource management, and value management. His leadership and managerial skills are a model for managers and leaders worldwide.
