New York: Jaswant Mody died in a car accident on July 4. A mechanical engineer retired from the City of New York, he was involved with many community organizations including FIA (he served as its Vice President) and GOPIO.
“With a heavy heart, we wanted to share with you the news of our dear husband and father, Jaswant Mody’s death on July 4th. He died in a tragic car accident and was the only one affected,” the family said in an email from son Neil Mody to community members.
According to local news reports his car struck a freight train at the New Brunswick Avenue crossing in New Jersey.
Jaswant Mody had been providing “dedicated community service for over 50 years” said FIA-tristate in a memorial flyer commemorating his life. Ankur Vaidya, chairman of FIA, noted that Mr Mody was there whenever help was needed. “I’ve known him for more than 25 years and respect him highly. I traveled with him several times to India for PBD events, and spoke to him just last week. It is very, very sad.”
A resident of Piscataway, NJ, Mody is survived by his wife Chandrika and children Neil and Dr. Lena.
