Freeport, NY: Rotary Club of Hicksville South (RCHS) held its annual backpack distribution event before the start of the school year at the Caroline B. Atkinson Elementary School of Freeport on August 27.
Despite the challenges of the Covid pandemic, RCHS gave away 500 good quality backpacks with school supplies to the students who are in need, through the 10 plus local schools and other NGOs.
Dignitaries attending the event included Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and Hempstead Town Clerk Kate Murray. Also present were Councilman Louis B Imbroto, Freeport School Board President, Ernest J. Kight; Freeport School Superintendent, Dr. Kishore Kuncham; Legislator Debrah Mule; Nassau County Director of Minority Affairs and RCHS Past President Lionel Chitty; Director of Asian American Affairs, Farrah Mozawalla; and Chairman of Human Rights Commission, Bobby K Kalotee.
RCHS President Nilima Madan talked about flagship club activities such as distributing backpacks, winter jackets, children garments, and food drives. For this year’s Backpack Project, she thanked Project Chair Shashi Malik, Co Chair Rekha Gupta and the team, Among major donors of many RCHS projects, Dr. Jay Sarkar and Mr. Rizwan Qureshi of HAB Bank were mentioned.
