Ganesha, the God of knowledge and elimination of troubles, has more than 108 names and is worshipped in India as well as abroad. All ceremonies begin with an invocation to Lord Ganesh. Commemorating the birth of the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati, the Ganesh Chaturthi festival is marked with the installation of the deity's clay idols in homes and publicly on elaborate pandals across India. Here are some Lord Ganesha postage stamps around the world...

Lord Ganesha is usually depicted as an elephant-headed figure with a large pot belly. He has four hands with one hand always extended to bless people. Like most other Hindu gods, he has a vehicle, in his case a rat, which is usually shown at the foot of the god. The unique combination of his elephant-like head and rat represents tremendous wisdom, intelligence, and presence of mind.
