Satyendar Jain gets relief over ‘proper’ jail food request

New Delhi: Jailed Delhi minister Satyendar Jain on Wednesday got relief from a Delhi court on his request for ‘proper food’. In its order, the court directed the Tihar jail administration to provide food to Jain which is available to under trial, if he is on a religious fast.

The court also asked the jail authorities to file a reply as to what food was being provided to the Aam Aadmi Party leader in the past six months, and whether he was on a religious fast during the given period.

“Let response be filed by the Tihar Jail Administration by tomorrow, i.e. November 24 by 2.00 PM….Let medical report be also filed of the applicant/accused no. Satyendar Kumar Jain giving details as per le 313 of Delhi Prison Rules, 2018, weight at present, MRI Scans due, if any. If yes, reasons for not getting the MRI Scans done, the ailment from which accused Jain suffering and and the treatment being given etc by 2.00 pm on November 28,” the judge said in his order.

On Tuesday, Jain had submitted in court that he was not getting any privilege in the jail. The AAP leader claimed he was even deprived of facilities like proper medical check up and food that he is supposed to get. He had sought food in the jail as per his religious beliefs.

In his petition, Jain had claimed he was not allowed to visit a Jain temple and he was on a fast and not having cooked food, pulses, grains and milk products. The application had further added that stopping food items during religious fast was illegal, arbitrary and amounted to harassment.

The Aam Aadmi Party and BJP have been involved in a fiery political showdown over leaked videos of Jain inside Tihar jail.

On Wednesday, the saffron party questioned new footage of him reportedly being served food from outside. The viral video shows the minister seen in the cell being served food by a person from outside. This comes a day after his lawyer claimed that Jain lost 28 kgs after not being provided basic food in the jail.
