Shri Thanedar wins Detroit Congressional Primary

Detroit: State Rep. Shri Thanedar on Wednesday morning won the likely-decisive Democratic primary in the open 13th Congressional District seat anchored in Detroit as his main opponents, state Sen. Adam Hollier and Focus: HOPE CEO Portia Roberson, conceded the race.

With Thanedar’s victory, it will almost certainly mean that Detroit, which has the largest Black majority of any major city in the U.S., will not have a Black representative in Congress for the first time since 1955.

Thanedar is an Indian immigrant and self-made millionaire entrepreneur. He has been representing a state House district in Detroit for two years. “This race was not about me. Michigan’s 13th Congressional District is one of the poorest in the country and I will fight for economic and racial justice in Congress,” Thanedar said after his win.
