Somerset County Democratic Committee mourns Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver

Somerville, NJ: It is with tremendous sorrow that the Somerset County Democratic Committee mourns the loss of Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver. Her groundbreaking career as the first Black woman to serve as Lt. Governor capped a life of service to the people of NJ.

Lt. Governor Oliver was a frequent guest of Somerset County, keynoting local Democratic events, especially the Women’s Caucus, and the main speaker at Somerset County’s first-ever Juneteenth celebration in 2021.

”I have known, respected and followed Sheila since her early days in East Orange. She was a great lady and a dear friend, whom I will deeply miss” said Somerset County Democratic Committee Chairwoman Peg Schaffer.  “I would like to extend my sincere condolences to her Mom, Brother and cherished extended family. We encourage everyone to honor her lifelong dedication by continuing her work to make positive change for the State of New Jersey” continued Chairwoman Schaffer.
