Dhaka: The Bangladesh Police has submitted a request to Interpol for a red notice against deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 11 others amid allegations of conspiring to overthrow the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

This comes after the police recently filed a case against Hasina and 72 others on charges of hatching a conspiracy to incite civil war and unseat the interim administration. Hasina is facing over 100 cases, including that of mass murder and corruption.

The red notice, if issued, would assist in locating and provisionally arresting the accused pending extradition or similar legal procedures, the Dhaka Tribune reported. "Interpol plays a key role in identifying the locations of fugitives residing abroad. Once the whereabouts of any absconding individual are confirmed, that information is relayed to Interpol,” said Enamul Haque Sagor, Assistant Inspector General (Media) at the Police Headquarters. “The request for the red notice is currently under process,” he added.

National Identity Cards of Hasina, family members 'locked'

Further, Bangladesh's top election body locked the National Identity Cards (NIDs) of Hasina and her nine family members. The NIDs of the 10 individuals, including Hasina, were locked through an official letter on February 16, signed by ASM Humayun Kabir, director general of the National Identity Registration Wing at the Election Commission, Daily Star newspaper reported.

According to officials, NID locking means its information can no longer be corrected, verified or changed. As the locked NIDs are unusable, Hasina and her nine family members will not get any NID-related services.

India halts Rs 5,000 cr rail projects

New Delhi: Citing political unrest in Bangladesh and safety concerns for workers, India has halted a series of cross-border railway projects aimed at linking the seven northeastern states with the mainland via the neighboring nation, a media report said.

Nearly Rs 5,000 crore worth of project funding and construction activities have been suspended, halting at least three active projects and survey work on five others, The Hindu Business Line newspaper reported.

The railway projects were crucial for linking northeastern states through Bangladesh's railway network and were aimed at easing dependence on the narrow Siliguri Corridor, which links the region to mainland India. The stalled railway projects are Akhaura-Agartala Cross-Border Rail Link and Khulabura-Sahabajpur rail line laying; Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line; and the Dhaka–Tongi–Joydebpur rail expansion project.
