Sweden working towards fossil-fuel-free economy: Ibrahim Baylan

New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh lauded the Indo-Swedish cooperation in the energy sector and hoped that it can go a long way in achieving the ultimate goal of a fossil-fuel-free economy. Dr Singh was addressing the India-Sweden Innovation meet on October 26 in New Delhi.

“Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Swedish Energy Agency have worked out and launched a Call for Industrial research and development (R&D) proposals in the energy sector and have received 20 joint industry-led proposals. These proposals are in an advanced stage of consideration and we may implement shortlisted projects soon,” Singh said.

The 8th India-Sweden Innovation Day meet was virtually organized on the theme ‘Accelerating India Sweden Green Transition’. Ibrahim Baylan, Swedish Minister for Business, Industry, and Innovation, Tanmaya Lal, Ambassador of India to Sweden and Latvia, Ambassador Klas Molin, Swedish Ambassador to India, Dr Renu Swarup, Secretary, DST and Biotechnology, Darja Isaksson, Director General, Vinnova, Sanjoo Malhotra CEO India Unlimited and Robin Sukhia, Secretary-General and President Sweden-India Business Council and senior officials from both the sides took part in the conference.

Dr Jitendra Singh noted with satisfaction that there is a new joint call on circular economy including the themes of Health Science and Waste to Wealth by the Department of Science and Technology, Department of Biotechnology, and Swedish Vinnova during 2021-2022.

In his address, Ibrahim Baylan said that Indo-Swedish cooperation continued even during the challenging times of the COVID pandemic. “The number of scientific collaborations has increased since 2018. There are new calls for finding new solutions and new resilience for developing a sustainable society,” Ibrahim said. Sweden is working hard on becoming a fossil-fuel-free economy and developing new climate-neutral technology products, he added.
