The South Asian Times Editor selected ‘2021 City Election Reporting Fellow’

New York: Parveen Chopra, Managing Editor of The South Asian Times, has been selected for 2021 Elections Reporting Fellowship by The Center for Community Media (CCM) of CUNY’s Graduate School of Journalism.

Chopra, who has been with The South Asian Times since its inception 12 years ago, is among the 30 Fellows who will produce in-depth election reportage, investigations, and explainers over the next 4 months. Said CCM in their Wednesday announcement: “These journalists represent some of the most dynamic voices in New York City’s vibrant community media sector. We are proud to support their efforts to keep their audiences informed about how to vote in this year’s crucial local and citywide elections.”

The 30 selected journalists write in nine languages and tell the stories of more than 15 communities – including Indian, Bangladeshi, Caribbean, Chinese, Jewish, Latino, Nepalese, Pakistani and Russian — across the tri-state area.

South Asians in the Fellows list include Prof Indrajit Saluja, Chief Editor of The Indian Panorama; Mohsin Zaheer, Editor of Urdu News; Kishor Panthi, Editor of Khasokhas (Nepali/English), and Mohammad Zainal Abedin, Editor of The Runner News (Bengali/English).

The CCM fellowship is aimed at expanding and deepening community media’s coverage of local and citywide elections so the journalists can inform New Yorkers who are often excluded and marginalized in local politics about how and where to vote.
