The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said that the board has decided to suspend the remainder of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) with immediate effect for one week.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been suspended "with immediate effect for one week," BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed in a statement issued Friday afternoon. The decision comes in the wake of rising cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan and aims to prioritize the safety and well-being of all involved.
The development follows Thursday's (May 8) abandoned match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala which was called off midway due to air raid alerts in nearby areas. The incident heightened security concerns particularly among overseas players and intensified calls for the BCCI to take swift action.
Further updates on fixtures and venues will follow a thorough review of the situation in consultation with the relevant authorities and stakeholders. "The decision was taken by the IPL Governing Council after due consultation with all key stakeholders, following representations from most franchisees, who conveyed the concerns and sentiments of their players, and also the views of the broadcaster, sponsors and fans," Saikia stated. "While the BCCI reposes full faith in the strength and preparedness of our armed forces, the Board considered it prudent to act in the collective interest of all stakeholders."
So far, 58 matches have been completed in IPL 2025, including the abandoned fixture in Dharamsala. Twelve league matches remain, scheduled to be played across Lucknow (2), Hyderabad, Ahmedabad (3), Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru (2), Mumbai, and Jaipur. The playoffs are set to take place in Hyderabad and Kolkata, pending the announcement of the new schedule.
