Castle Connolly honors four NYC Health+Hospitals’ leaders and physicians among ‘2024 Top Black Doctors’

NYC Health + Hospitals on February 16, 2024 announced that four of its hospital leaders and physicians were among 240 physicians across 30 states and 57 specialties named to Castle Connolly’s list of ‘2024 Top Black Doctors’ for their medical expertise and culturally-responsive care. The physicians featured on the list were nominated by their peers and then evaluated by Castle Connolly for criteria including consideration of each nominee’s professional qualifications, education, hospital and faculty appointments, research leadership, professional reputation, disciplinary history, interpersonal skills, and outcomes data. Castle Connolly is a health care directory that helps patients find providers. The ‘Top Black Doctors’ distinction is part of Castle Connolly’s Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative geared toward honoring exceptional clinicians and make it easier for individuals to find providers who have shared backgrounds and experiences.

“As we celebrate Black History Month, I am thrilled to honor the exceptional Black physicians from our health system who were recognized by Castle Connolly,” said Ivelesse Mendez-Justiniano, NYC Health + Hospitals’ Vice President and Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer. “The unique, lived experiences of Dr. Joan A. Culpepper-Morgan, Dr. Kecia Gaither, Dr. Lewis W. Marshall, and Dr. Wendy C. Wilcox, as well as our other exceptional Black physicians, are instrumental toward addressing the health care disparities that disproportionately impact the Black community in the United States. With this recognition, we can continue to celebrate and uplift the trailblazing work of these physicians year-round.”

“As the Chair of Council of CABs, I am very excited to see NYC Health + Hospitals’ Top Black Physicians not only being highlighted for their diversity, but also for the excellent care they provide to patients in our communities,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Council of Community Advisory Boards Chair Karen Dixon. “Having Top Black Physicians available to administer care to individuals of color provides a level of comfort in knowing there are shared experiences and will usually lead to positive health outcomes.”
