Hit Telugu superhero movie soars as it enters North America

Indian superhero movie Hanu Man has made a smashing entry in the North American market.

As reported by Variety, the Telugu-language Hanu Man, distributed by California-based Nirvana Studios, screened in 430 locations over the weekend, earning $2.3 million so far. Nirvana Studios representative Sundeep Yerramreddy discussed their strategy for the film’s release, “It was a crowded release weekend,” he said. “but we were well prepared and put in a lot of thought, had a release strategy planned for the film, and we covered every city. For a film of this scale, opening across 430 locations is pretty good,” Yerramreddy added. In addition to its North American box-office takings, Hanu Man has made $9 million worldwide since its January 12 release, including $6 million in India, $188,000 in the U.K., $181,000 in Australia, and $136,000 in the United Arab Emirates.

Nirvana Studios promoted the movie across radio and social media, especially Instagram, in North America. The studio also promoted Hanu Man via tie-ups with South Asian restaurants and grocery stores. Nirvana will add at least 100 locations across North America from January 18. “The film received a tremendous response, and we are receiving requests to add cities that we couldn’t get due to the competition in the first week,” Yerramreddy said. “The film is going very well, and $6 million to $7 million is achievable at this point,” the studio rep added.

Hanu Man is set in the fictional village of Anjanadri and follows Hanumanthu, who miraculously awakens the Hindu god Lord Hanuman’s power after an accident that occurs near the sea. The movie stars Teja Sajja (Adbhutam), Amritha Aiyer (Arjuna Phalguna), Varalaxmi Sarathkumar (Kota Bommali PS), and Vinay Rai (Gandeevadhari Arjuna). Prasanth Varma (Zombie Reddy) directed Hanu Man. Niranjan Reddy Kandagatla produced the film for Primeshow Entertainment. A Hanu Man sequel, Jai Hanuman, will premiere in 2025.
