Celebrate Earth Day with Car Free Earth Day NYC!

Earth Day is fast approaching, marking one of the most exciting events of the year. Since its inception in 1970, this day has served as a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting our planet and promoting sustainable environmental practices. In New York City, this message comes to life with Car Free Earth Day NYC, an annual event that has gained unprecedented momentum under the leadership of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodríguez and with the support of Mayor Eric Adams, making it one of the largest events of its kind across the United States.

Ydanis Rodríguez, renowned for his commitment to public safety and the environment, has been the architect of Car Free Day, an initiative that promotes earth-friendly transportation methods by closing several iconic streets throughout the city and dedicating them exclusively to pedestrians, cyclists, and family-friendly activities. Since its successful launch in April 2016, Ydanis, then Council Member of Upper Manhattan, turned this day, in honor of Earth Day, into an annual tradition that continues to capture the interest of New Yorkers almost a decade later.

These events are a clear example of reimagining the use of public spaces, something that Mayor Eric Adams’ administration has fully supported Commissioner Rodriguez in driving forward all initiatives aimed at allowing the population to experience what public spaces would be like when used in a more creative way. The expansion of this type of initiative has characterized Mayor Adams’ administration and Commissioner Rodriguez’s tenure.

This year, the event organized by the Department of Transportation (DOT) will start at 10:00 am and run until 4:00 pm, an hour longer than last year, promising to bring new innovations in programming and a greater diversity of program offerings. Following the success of the past Summer Streets event, which was expanded in size and ethnic diversity of performing groups, creating a unique atmosphere that can only be seen in New York City.

Join the DOT and celebrate Earth Day in a unique and meaningful way. Leave your car at home and join the community in promoting more sustainable transportation and a cleaner, safer city for all!

We look forward to seeing you on April 20th at Car Free Earth Day NYC!
