Ex-Indian ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu joins BJP

New York: Former Indian Ambassador in Washington Taranjit Singh Sandhu joined the BJP on Tuesday. He is likely to be fielded from the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat. The AAP has fielded Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal from Amritsar.

External affairs minister S Jaishankar welcomed Sandhu to the BJP and expressed confidence in his contribution to the country’s development.

Sandhu had assumed charge as the Indian Ambassador to the United States in February 2020. His most immediate task after his appointment was the then-President Donald Trump’s visit to India.

Previously, he had served as the First Secretary (Political) in Washington DC from 1997 to 2000. He was also the Consul General of India in Frankfurt from September 2011 to July 2013, and the deputy chief of mission at the Embassy of India in Washington DC from July 2013 to January 2017.

Amritsar likely to have US consulate, says Sandhu

Holy city of Amritsar in Punjab may soon get the US consulate, said Taranjit Singh Sandhu, who is now being considered to be one of the BJP probables for the Amritsar seat.

Dr Sandhu had a meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar after joining the BJP and claimed that Amritsar could be chosen as the destination for setting up an American consulate.

“With the opening of the American consulate in Amritsar, the people of the border area would get many facilities to get visas from here and traders might expand their businesses,” he said.
