Kiran Rao to submit ‘Laapataa Ladies’ for Oscars?

Kiran Rao, during a promotional event for her upcoming film, ‘Laapataa Ladies’, discussed whether she would submit the film for the Oscars. The filmmaker, along with the cast, was in Delhi to attend a special screening of ‘Laapataa Ladies’. Kiran Rao’s directorial venture is set to hit theatres on March 1, 2024.

At a press conference held on February 19 in New Delhi, Kiran was asked whether she would send ‘Laapataa Ladies’ for the Oscars. She said, “Our primary recognition comes from the audience’s response at the box office. If the viewers and the nation appreciate our work, that would be the greatest accolade for us.”

Kiran added, “Following that, we will consider submitting the film for the Oscars next year. There is a specific community tasked with assessing and selecting the finest films of the year, and if our film is deemed worthy, we will submit it for the prestigious Oscars. However, for now, we are eagerly anticipating the recognition we are yet to receive on March 1, 2024, hinting at the film’s release.”

‘Laapataa Ladies’ stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava and Chhaya Kadam in lead roles. The film has been made under the banner of Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions, with the script based on an award-winning story by Biplab Goswami. The screenplay & dialogue are written by Sneha Desai, while the additional dialogues have been jotted down by Divyanidhi Sharma.

The trailer of the film was released on January 24. Directed by Kiran Rao, the film is set in the backdrop of rural India and is about a young bride who is lost during a train ride, leading to the man going away with someone else. What follows is the man going to the police to find his real wife. Played by Ravi Kishan, the policeman then trails her in a bid to find any hidden motive, and the real wife.
