President Murmu nominates Sudha Murty to Rajya Sabha

Author and philanthropist Sudha Murty was nominated to Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu on Friday. Sudha Murty is the wife of billionaire and founder of Infosys, Narayana Murthy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce this news. He shared a photograph with Sudha Murty and wrote,”I am delighted that the President of India has nominated Sudha Murty Ji to the Rajya Sabha. Sudha Ji’s contributions to diverse fields including social work, philanthropy and education have been immense and inspiring. Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our ‘Nari Shakti’, exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation’s destiny. Wishing her a fruitful Parliamentary tenure.”

Last year, during the inaugural of new Parliament building, she was invited to visit the same. While speaking to reporters who were waiting outside, Murty expressed her awe and admiration for the new building.

“It is so beautiful…No words to describe. I wanted to see this for a long time. It was a dream come true today. It is beautiful…It’s art, culture, Indian history – everything is beautiful,” she quipped.

Murty added what was truly remarkable was the short duration in which the building was set up. “In such a short period, it was beautifully arranged and curated… I would really like to spend a day or two to see all these things.”

As a reporter asked her cheekily if she would “officially” like to be inside the Parliament, the 73-year-old joined her hands and shook her head, saying, “Whatever I am, I am happy.”

Notably, she will now visit Parliament for the first time as a member of the house.
