Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Indian diaspora in the Netherlands during his official visit from May 15 to 17, 2026, highlighting the significance of cultural identity among Indians abroad and the importance of maintaining family values and traditions.
He said Indians living abroad never forget their roots and continue contributing positively to the countries they reside in. “Whenever I had conversations with the leadership of the Netherlands, they always praised the Indian diaspora. Every Indian is proud of your contribution to Dutch society and economy,” the Prime Minister said.
He also recalled the deep and enduring historical ties of the Surinami-Hindustani community with India, and commended their efforts to preserve and celebrate their rich cultural heritage across generations.
The PM highlighted that the large number of Indian professionals in the technology sector and the growing number of Indian students in Dutch universities, particularly in innovation-driven fields, were adding strength to the contemporary partnership between the two countries.
Further, PM Modi assured the community that the Government of India stood firmly behind every Indian living abroad and remained committed to their welfare. He called upon them to actively contribute to the Viksit Bharat journey by leveraging their experience in the Netherlands.
The Netherlands is home to the largest number of Indian origin people in mainland Europe, including around 200,000 members of the Surinami-Hindustani community. In this regard, he highlighted the liberalization in OCI eligibility for the Surinami-Hindustani diaspora from the 4th to 6th generation.
