New Delhi: India and the US must remain at the forefront of developing critical technologies to protect and defend their value systems, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval said in the presence of his visiting American counterpart Jake Sullivan.

Addressing the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET) roundtable organized by the industry body, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), in the national capital, Doval highlighted the role of industry in technology and the progress of iCET since its inception.

“The US and India have got to remain at the forefront of technology in case we need to protect and defend our value systems and it is part of a larger strategic interest,” Doval said.

His comments came a day after he and Sullivan unveiled a raft of transformative initiatives to deepen India-US cooperation in areas of artificial intelligence, semiconductors, critical minerals, advanced telecommunication, and defense space.

In his address, Sullivan noted three important buckets for technology partnerships, the first being innovation, the second as production, and the third being deployment.

The top Biden administration official highlighted the importance of innovation and emphasized the need for government support for the private sector. There exists bipartisan support for Indian industry in the US, he said, adding that building the ecosystem and supply chain is the key to production.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan of deepening the India-US strategic partnership during his third term. “Met US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. India is committed to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership for global good,” PM Modi posted on X after Sullivan called him in New Delhi on June 18. The Prime Minister’s Office stated that NSA Sullivan briefed PM Modi on the progress in various areas of bilateral cooperation, particularly under the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET).
