Former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh, architect of the country’s landmark economic reforms of 1991, passed away in New Delhi on Thursday night. He was 92.
Singh, who was being treated for age-related medical conditions, was rushed to the emergency ward of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after he lost consciousness, the hospital said in its bulletin.
“Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to medical emergency at AIIMS Delhi at 8.06 pm. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9.51 pm,” said the AIIMS bulletin.
Singh was twice prime minister in the Congress-led UPA governments of 2004 and 2009, and was the finance minister in the Narasimha Rao government of 1991 which opened up the Indian economy and ushered in the era of economic liberalization.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow following his demise calling it a great loss for the nation. He also stated that Singh's life serves as an inspiration for future generations, showing how one can overcome struggles and achieve great heights.
In the shared video, PM Modi said, " We all are deeply saddened by the demise of former PM Dr Manmohan Singh. His passing is a setback to the whole nation...his life is an example for future generations regarding how we can rise above struggles and achieve greater heights."
He further highlighted Singh's achievements as an economist and said, "He will always be remembered as an honest man, a great economist and a leader who dedicated himself to reforms. As an economist, he provided a lot of services to the nation. During a challenging time, he served as RBI Governor...when he was Finance Minister in the cabinet of former PM Bharat Ratna PV Narasimha Rao, he gave the country that was reeling under economic crisis, a new direction in terms of economy..."
